IF YOU WANT READABILITY, THERE ARE 3 CHARACTERISTICS WHICH
ALLOW YOU TO MAXIMIZE READABLE DISTANCE. |
|
|
|
| |
1. |
Height. The greater the height the further the readable distance. 1" of letter height gives about
45' of readability.
|
|
| |
2. |
Contrast. Use dark numbers on a light background or light numbers on a dark background. It's essential.
This is the reason shiny brass numbers are difficult to read. Brass is close to the middle of the color spectrum.
So brass on a white or on a black background only has about 50% of the contrast as white on a black background.
Brass numbers mounted on something that is brown or tan in color tend to disappear.

3. |
Stroke Width. The lines comprising a number or letter need to be consistently wide. Letters with thin
sections here and there may have more style, but for readability at a distance, a uniform wide stroke width
is needed.
