IF YOU WANT READABILITY, THERE ARE 3 CHARACTERISTICS WHICH
ALLOW YOU TO MAXIMIZE READABLE DISTANCE.

     1.   Height. The greater the height the further the readable distance. 1" of letter height gives about 45' of readability.

     2.   Contrast. Use dark numbers on a light background or light numbers on a dark background. It's essential. This is the reason shiny brass numbers are difficult to read. Brass is close to the middle of the color spectrum. So brass on a white or on a black background only has about 50% of the contrast as white on a black background. Brass numbers mounted on something that is brown or tan in color tend to disappear.

     3.   Stroke Width. The lines comprising a number or letter need to be consistently wide. Letters with thin sections here and there may have more style, but for readability at a distance, a uniform wide stroke width is needed.
